Blue Jays boosted Rogers’ revenue in Q2 as live sports resumed – National


Rogers Communications Inc. says it earned $302 million in the second quarter on a 14-per-cent increase in revenues as it continued to recover from pandemic lockdowns.

The cable wireless company says it earned 60 cents per diluted share for the three months ended June 30, up from 54 cents per share or $279 million a year earlier.

Adjusted profits were $387 million or 76 cents per share, compared with $310 million or 60 cents per share in the second quarter of 2020.

Revenues were $3.58 billion, up from $3.16 billion as wireless service revenue increased two per cent, cable revenue rose five per cent media revenues surged 84 per cent due to higher advertising Blue Jays revenues as live sports resumed.

The Toronto-based company, which is in the process of acquiring Shaw Communications Inc., was expected to earn 77 cents per share in adjusted profits on $3.56 billion of revenues, according to financial data firm Refinitiv.

Michigan reports uptick in Legionnaires’ disease


Michigan health officials are investigating a recent uptick in cases of Legionnaires’ disease, or a severe form of pneumonia.

The Michigan Department of Health Human Services noted 107 cases reported across 25 counties between July 1 July 14, translating to a 569% surge over the same period in 2020 a 161% increase over the same period in 2019.


People contract Legionnaires’ disease when inhaling Legionella bacteria, while most healthy individuals don’t become infected after exposure, certain populations are at higher risk for illness like older adults, smokers immunocompromised individuals, health officials said. 

The illness is not spread person-to-person. Legionella pneumophila, a bacterium, is usually the cause of the illness, according to Mayo Clinic. It can be found in soil water, but more commonly causes infection when it multiplies in water systems such as hot tubs air conditioners.

“Recent weather trends including rain, flooding warmer weather may be playing a role in the rise of reported legionellosis cases this summer,” Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, MDHHS chief medical executive chief deputy director for health, said in a news release posted Monday. “We want everyone to be aware of Legionnaire’s disease, especially if they may be at higher risk for illness we ask that healthcare providers remain vigilant, test treat appropriately.”


Wayne County had the most confirmed cases at 19, followed by OaklCounty (17), City of Detroit (17) Macomb County (15), according to the release.

Warm, standing water encourages bacterial growth in water systems, while legionellosis cases occur more frequently in the summer early fall, the increase in cases was higher than expected this season, officials said, while also noting the reopening of buildings may also contribute to the increase in cases. As of earlier this week, no common sources of infection had been identified.

Airtel, Intel announce collaboration to accelerate 5G rollout in India


Bharti Airtel is collaborating with Intel for 5G network development by leveraging vRAN/O-RAN technologies.

The collaboration is part of Airtel’s 5G roadmap for India as it transforms its networks to allow its customers to reap the full possibilities of the hyperconnected world where Industry 4.0 to cloud gaming virtual/augmented reality become an everyday experience.

Airtel is the first telecom operator in India to demonstrate 5G over a LIVE network is conducting 5G trials in major cities.

Airtel will deploy Intel’s latest third generation Xeon Scalable processors, FPGAs eASICs, Ethernet 800 series across its network to build a solid foundation for rolling out wide-scale 5G, mobile edge computing network slicing.

As members of the O-RAN Alliance, Airtel Intel will work closely for developing a range of Make in India 5G solutions enabling world-class telecom infrastructure in India through local partners.

Open radio access network (O-RAN) will be an area of innovation creativity in the coming years. These O-RAN platforms will leverage Intel FlexRAN, a reference architecture with both software hardware components, enable software-based radio base stations that can run-on general-purpose servers located at the network edge.

J&J expects to sell $2.5B in COVID-19 vaccines this year despite safety issues – National


Johnson & Johnson raised its 2021 revenue estimates on Wednesday forecast it would sell $2.5 billion worth of its COVID-19 vaccine this year, as it strives to quell production safety problems catch up with rivals Pfizer Moderna.

Although Johnson & Johnson’s single-dose shot was approved in the United States months after shots from Pfizer Inc Moderna Inc were cleared, its vaccine sales outlook still pales in comparison with its peers reflects the widening gap in the global vaccine race.

Pfizer Moderna have forecast $26 billion $19.2 billion in annual sales of their vaccines, respectively.

The J&J vaccine, once touted as an important tool for vaccinations in hard-to-reach areas, has the least uptake in Europe among all the vaccines approved for use, has also struggled in United States.

J&J expects to produce 500 million to 600 million doses of the vaccine this year, Chief Financial Officer Joseph Wolk told CNBC on Wednesday.

J&J raised its expectations for full-year sales, encouraged by a recovery in sales at its medical devices unit higher demfor treatments such as psoriasis Crohn’s disease drug Stelara.

Sales at the company’s medical devices unit rose 62.7 per cent to $6.98 billion, boosting its second-quarter numbers.

Uber can deliver your Costco groceries (if you live in Texas)


Uber’s grocery deliveries will soon include Costco’s bulk-sized foodstuffs, provided you live in the right state. The internet giant is launching a pilot that will deliver Costco groceries from 25 warehouses in Texas, with seven more locations available in the “coming weeks.” Uber Uber Eats app users will initially find the option available in Austin, Dallas Houston.

You’ll need to place at least a $35 order, you’ll have to pay for delivery unless you’re an Uber Pass or Eats Pass member. A virtual storefront in the Uber Uber Eats apps will focus on your “favorite” essential items.

This is Uber’s first experiment with an American food wholesaler. It’s not certain if the pilot will translate to a full-fledged expansion, but it would represent a major move if so. While Uber recently doubled the scale of its US grocery deliveries with over 400 new cities, a larger team-up with Costco would improve the depth of that service — you’d have more shopping choices, particularly if you need to make large orders.
